Old Fashioned German Shepherd Dogs

I'm sure many of you have seen breeders claiming to breed "Old Fashioned GSDs". They boast about their dogs large sizes. Most dogs under this category get into the 100s in weight.
[Whereas the largest the standard calls for is 90lbs]

These so called "Old Fashioned GSDs" are 'big boned' and over sized.

[That particular boy is boasted to be around 127 pounds. ]

Now, here is a True 'Old GSD'. Circa 1921. [He also happens to by one of my favorites. ]

I'm sure other enthusiasts share in my distress.

These breeders use of the term "Old Fashioned" is just a clever marketing term. [Much like the use of 'proper' breed names for these designer dogs. ]

German Shepherds were not meant to be this size.

Yeah the "old GSD" looks beautiful - very sleek and elegant.
GSDs were bred to be working dogs. I just can't imagine big, bulky dogs herding all day or tracking all day.

Its horrible what people will do for money -_- Y'know, just after I'd seen you posting about this I saw an add in the paper about 'Old style GSD pups'. Ergh.

Cookie must be like that first one. She is a husky girl. She used to be very close to 100 lbs, but the vet wanted us to bring her down to just below 90. We did. When last weighed, she was around 87 lbs.
I have a loooooong book about GSDs filled with old pictures like the second one. They are lovely.

That big "Old Fashioned" GSD is actually a Clumber Shepherd.

I think Sasha is more like the "Old Shepherd". She weighs 57 -58 lbs. She is small for GSD but very fast and lean.



as you can tell in this silly picture, she is sleek and light on her feet. (on and she LOVEs water! LOL)
